The Brief
Health Matters came to us needing more of everything, more consult rooms, more services, more capacity, without disrupting a clinic that was already running at full pace. The brief covered three distinct projects: an extension for additional doctors and consulting space, a new Urgent Care clinic for acute services, and a dedicated Skin Clinic for skin health and cosmetic treatment. What tied them together was a single goal; grow the practice without losing what made it work.
The Outcome
Health Matters Karalee now operates as a single, connected healthcare environment, with significantly more clinical capacity, a dedicated after-hours Urgent Care offering, and a Skin Clinic that stands on its own as a destination within the practice. Patients move through a clearer, more considered journey, staff have the space to work efficiently, and the practice has room to keep growing.
Delivered in stages, with zero disruption to a fully operational clinic.
The Design
Rather than bolting on an addition, we opened up the existing tenancy and let the new space flow directly from it. Five new consult rooms sit around a central waiting area, giving patients an intuitive path through the clinic and staff a layout that supports efficient day-to-day circulation, all while keeping the look and feel of the original practice intact.
A compact, highly functional facility built to operate independently when it needs to. The Urgent Care clinic connects to the main practice but has its own entry, allowing it to run after hours without opening up the rest of the tenancy. Materials and finishes were matched to the existing clinic, so despite its specialised function, it reads as part of the same practice.
The Skin Clinic was the one space designed to stand apart. While still physically connected to Health Matters, it needed its own identity, a destination in its own right, with a more refined, contemporary feel that reflects the specialised nature of the service. The layout takes patients through a clear progression, from arrival and consultation through to treatment and total body photography, with privacy and calm built into every stage.
Construction
With the clinic trading throughout, sequencing was everything. Works were staged across the three components so that each new area could be built, connected and handed over without interrupting the day-to-day running of the practice, patients kept coming through the door, and doctors kept seeing them.
Our team coordinated closely with the practice to schedule trades outside clinic hours where needed, manage access and hoarding between live and construction zones, and keep each stage moving to a fixed program. Mechanical, electrical and hydraulic works were carefully integrated to meet the clinical requirements of each space. From the acoustic and infection-control standards in the consult rooms to the specific service needs of the Urgent Care bays and the procedure room in the Skin Clinic.
Throughout, the build stayed true to the design brief: matching finishes and detailing back to the existing practice in the extension and Urgent Care areas, while giving the Skin Clinic room to establish its own aesthetic.
